Why a League? Even though we compete with each other, together we can address different socially-oriented problems. We believe that only through the global lens can we solve global problems.
When will the event take place? The league will run continuously between April and May - you can choose when and where to work on the problems. The WDL Finals will happen over a weekend in July.
Where will the event take place? The league will be an ongoing online competition, anyone from anywhere is urged to apply. Although the WDL Finals were initially planned to take place in Porto, Portugal, due to the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WDL Finals will be held online.
Are there any technical requirements in order to participate in WDL? Even though we accept all different levels of experience and background, we do expect a minimum of basic programming skills and knowledge of data science.
What's the estimated time effort for WDL? WDL is completely self-paced, so you can adapt according to your normal schedule. Each challenge lasts 15 days so you and your team can decide how many hours to dedicate according to your expectations.
Do I have to submit a solution for all the Stages? No, you don't, the final leaderboard score will only consider the best 3 submissions out of 4. However, the more stages you participate in, the higher the chances of going through to the Finals.
How many team members can I have? Each team must have 3 or 4 members. To be considered from a certain country, the team should have, at least, 51% of the applicants of the same nationality. If a team doesn’t meet that criteria it is considered an international team.
I want to sponsor the World Data League. What should I do? Thank you for your interest! We would love to have your support. Please drop us an email at email@example.com and we’ll make sure to get back to you as soon as possible.
If I apply, am I automatically accepted? No, there are some criteria to meet during the selection phase. More information about that is available in the rulebook.
I want to be a judge/mentor. How can I join?We are always on the lookout for great profiles to be judges or mentors in the competition. Write to firstname.lastname@example.org if you feel like you have a profile for that.
Can I apply individually? Nope, who wants to be a lone wolf? Go get yourself a team. :)
What do I do if I don't have a team? WDL is a team effort and so we are not actively matching people. We incentivate you to look into your own network and find team members. However, we have a public channel on Discord where you can find more people that are also looking for team members. Enter here.
Can partners or supporters participate in WDL?Employees of sponsors, as well as their direct family or household members, can participate but are not eligible for winning any prize. Employees of topic entities cannot participate in WDL.
How much is the participation fee? The World Data League is free to participate! So, you’ve got nothing to lose.
I have an interesting challenge for WDL regarding this year’s topic! How can I cooperate with you?If you are somehow related to this year's topic (e.g. city council, company, foundation) - that is a topic entity - we want to collaborate with you! It is a possibility to find new solutions for problems that you have at hand, and also to learn which data you need to collect to solve problems and issues you might be facing. That is why we are always looking for entities that can provide us problems and/or datasets. In return, we will be sure to share with you a report on how the problems were solved and how the data can be used. No charges are involved. Write to email@example.com if you are interested.
What will happen to all the solutions? All the solutions will be made public at the end of the competition, under the MIT license. We will also contribute to community knowledge by writing a public report on how the data is applied in the context of the competition’s topic. We believe that to have a real impact, knowledge for solving social-oriented problems should be open.
I have another question! You can drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, we’ll be more than happy to answer any question - we actually reply to emails :)
